IAPH award for Luneplate

On Friday, 12 May 2017, the Silver Medal of the 2017 IAPH Port Environment Awards was presented to the ports of Bremen at the World Ports Conference in Bali. The International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) awarded the medal in recognition of our exceptional Luneplate project.

The development of Luneplate is a perfect example of responsible port-related infrastructure management. In the course of port expansion and other construction projects, bremenports had to find areas which were of high value for the local flora and fauna. To compensate for the negative impact of the change of use of such nature areas, to satisfy its own corporate responsibility standards and to promote the protection of nature and the environment, bremenports has planned and implemented extensive compensation projects in the Luneplate area over the last 25 years.

As part of the Luneplate project, functioning compensatory mitigation sites have been created to provide habitats for a large number of animal and plant species, many of which are endangered. The Luneplate project is the first compensatory mitigation site that includes large and diverse tidal habitats behind the main dyke line. A special flood barrage has been constructed to ensure that this unique area is permanently protected.

One central objective of bremenports was to make this unique site accessible to the general public. To facilitate public participation whilst simultaneously upholding nature conservation policies, the project also included an extensive concept for visitors, which includes an observation platform, a hide and information boards. The company also offers regular excursions, which have proved very popular.

The compensatory mitigation sites on Luneplate cover an area of around 1060 hectares and are of international importance because of their relevance for the East Atlantic migration route.

We are delighted to receive this award from the IAPH and will continue to pay due attention to the reconciliation of ecological and economic demands in future.
