North German port managing company bremenports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pelindo I, one of the four largest state-owned terminal operators in Indonesia. The MoU shall facilitate human resource development activities for staff members of Pelindo I. In Indonesia, there is a huge demand for well-qualified professionals in the maritime industry. This holds true in particular for terminal operations and hinterland transport. Under the MoU, the trainings will also focus on business management techniques.
Pelindo I strongly encourages human resource development and has approached bremenports as an international training consultant for the port industry. The Indonesian consulate general to Germany supported the MoU and assissted in the negotiations.
bremenports, a company owned by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, has operated in Indonesia since 2008. Consultants of bremenports supported the Directorate General of Sea Transportation (DGST) implementing a new port law which came into force in 2008. The experts assisted in the statutory separation of public port management and private cargo handling actitivities. Approximately 400 staff of DGST took part in bremenports-lead trainings on the new role of DGST as a public port manager.
bremenports uses this experience and offers a taylor-made online Bachelor-study programme in maritime logistics and port management starting in Summer 2017. This 8-semester programme introduces to state-of-the-art port management concepts. The programme addresses the requirements of the maritime industry in emerging markets. As an online course, it can be studied any-where-any-time, ensuring access to knowledge “made in Germany” even from remote areas. It has been developed together with the University of Applied Sciences Wismar, Germany. Wismar University also has a presence in Indonesia offering simulation-based trainings to master mariners and watch-keeping officers to maintain their professional licences.
